I would recommend Dear Esther to a Terence Malik fan, or someone who reads a lot of poetry. Dear Esther however doesn't have anything beyond its beautiful monologue.ĭear Esther is 'art house' through and through, but it has a closer connection to the world of art house film than the indie gaming scene. Even games that demand a certain level of engagement with fairly in-depth philosophy like The Witness still contain appeal beyond their cerebral element (i.e. I could easily list, off the top of my head, 20 great films I don't think teenagers would enjoy (generally speaking) and 20 great novels I don't think teenagers would enjoy (generally speaking), but I don't think I could think of 20 games. I mean games that really have no desire to appeal to younger audiences due to their content. And by that I don't mean 18-rated games, many of which have a lot of appeal to those under the age of 18. I think that one issue with gaming is that, unlike film and literature, there actually aren't all that many games aimed at adults. I think it's a safe bet that a lot of the people you are talking about are very likely to be younger players. Ok, but I don't think any of that contradicts my point about the age thing. It was also the first of its genre and a lot of people didn't find the story all that interesting. Dear Esther was considered an art piece, not a game, but that wasn't always communicated well. The one particular story in it that I would like to mention though as being miles ahead of the others is the fish cannery one that one felt like a lot of effort and care went into it and it felt far more fleshed out than the others. The other major aspect I wasn't a fan of was how everything was pushed onto you and it didn't feel like there was any subtlety to it, basically a great example of something ignoring the idea of "show, don't tell". Instead it felt designed to appeal more to people that otherwise aren't fans of the genre through staying extremely linear (despite the claims of you "exploring" the house) and trying too hard to keep your attention by throwing constant new things at you through many short and shallow stories of the family members. I love this genre but for the sake of discussion, I'd say that in my opinion What Remains of Edith Finch was a massive disappointment and didn't feel truly representative of the rest of the genre. /r/GamePhysics - Clips of game physics shining and glitchingĭesign based on /r/FlatBlue created by /u/creesch./r/gaming4gamers - middle ground between purely-for-fun and more serious subreddits./r/GamingLeaksAndRumours - Leaks and Rumors.
